The definition of transfiguration is “a complete change of form or appearance into a more beautiful or spiritual state.” While this word is often used in religious practice, I have taken a more secular approach. For this piece, transfiguration references the musical ideas found in my string quartet, which are repeated and and transformed, beginning dissonant, and gaining clarity at the end.
Written for the Contemporary Youth Orchestra's principal string players.

I listen to nature documentaries to fall asleep, and the ones based on the ocean have always been my favorites. These ocean documentaries inspired “Emergence”. This piece is a journey, starting from the from the bottom the ocean and finally emerging onto the shore.
